Warwick University is one of the UK's leading universities and the quality and impact of its research is demonstrated by excellent research rankings with Warwick ranked at 7th overall in the UK in the last Research Assessment Exercise. The School of Engineering is a top ten UK General Engineering department (RAE 2008). There are approximately 130 academic and teaching staff, 300 research staff, and 1,200 postgraduates following taught programmes or undertaking research. The School has well-founded laboratories with strengths in sensors, power electronics and communications. The Microsensors & Bioelectronics Laboratory (MBL) (formerly Sensors Research Laboratory) was established in 1987 by Professor Gardner. MBL focuses upon leading edge research in the fields of chemical microsensor systems and MEMS, and has extensive research facilities. About 25 research programmes have been carried out with major companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Honeywell and Sony.
